Today we went to the elephant hospital! This hospital was so
cool and this was the first non-human hospital we have been to during the
entire trip! It was a small outside area with a few elephants chained up. The
hospital is mostly for older elephants that can no longer participate in the
shows or elephant rides; these elephants need extra care and more attention.
Also many of the elephants that are seen at the hospital have accidently stepped
on and triggered a land mine. Apparently land mines are commonly found up in
the mountains near the Burmese border as they are left over from past wars.
Today we saw an older elephant with a hurt foot. He was
having difficulty balancing and kept swaying from side to side. There were also
two huge elephants that were constipated, we watched the workers give one of
them an enema. The enema was actually just a garden hose and this did not look
like a pleasant experience for the elephant nor the worker performing the enema.
One of the mother elephants was accompanied by her baby, I guess elephants need
moral support too when they’re in the hospital!
