Wat Maha That

Today we explored Wat Maha That, which is located in the Ayutthaya Historical Park. The Wat Maha That, which actually means "Temple of the Great Relic" is a royal Buddhist Temple. The temple was built in 1374 by King Borommaracha I and in 1767, it was set on fire in the Burmese attack. Only a few structues still remain.

In one part of the temple, there was Buddha's head embedded in tree roots. The head was once part of a sandstone Buddha image that fell off the main body many years ago. It became trapped in the roots of a Bodhi tree that continues to grow.

Here we are paying our respects to Buddha.
