Inpatient pharmacy at Suanprung Psychiatric Hospital

At Suanprung psychiatric hospital we visited their inpatient pharmacy and we were all surprised by the way that they organize and dispense the medications to their patients.

They dispensed the medications in large pill boxes which is similar to the way that people keep their pills in a pill box in the US, however the boxes at Suanprung were made up for 4 weeks at a time!

We were shown one of the older wooden boxes they used in the past, which was considerably heavier than the plastic ones. We were told that the wooden ones weigh about 1 kilogram or 2.2 lbs.

We were informed that they keep 2 of these pill boxes for each patient. In a hospital that currently serves 500 patients that's a lot of boxes!

They redo the boxes each day for approximately 100 of their patients due to changes in the doctor's orders. This system seems to work fine for them, but the pharmacies in US hospitals would have to be very large to keep that many boxes. I am grateful that we have pyxis machines so we wouldn't have to use such a system.
