Making traditional herbal compresses

Today, after learning about traditional Thai and Chinese medicine we were given the opportunity to build our own compress. I had seen these small tight bundles of herbs in shops, but had yet to acquire one.

We learned that each satchel contains a number of either fresh or dried herbs and that determines how many uses it is good for and how long it is fresh. The ones made of fresh herbs would need to be kept cold and is only good for 2 uses, but we made ones with dried herbs which makes it so they are good for 2 years and up to 5 uses if stored correctly.

We were given little pouches of premixed herbs to use and though it smelled strongly of camphor, it also contained lemongrass, tumeric, ginger, lime, tamarind and a few other ingredients.

First we poured our ingredients out onto a small cloth square and gathered the corners.

Then we worked on pulling the ends of the cloth as we gripped it so as to make our balls as tight as possible.
After tying it off we folded the corners in then folded the top over onto itself.
From there we wound the rest of our string up the folded cloth to create a handle.
After we finished tying them off, they gave us bags to store them in and even sealed them up so they would be fresh when we used them.

All of our finished products looked and smelled great!
